But no, with fake tunes from her compatriot John Butler, Steph becomes a storyteller, and masters her six-string folk or blues as if it were the simplest thing in the world. We hear yawning in advance in the background. The Australian dares to use the most stripped-down formula there is: on stage, there is her, her guitar, her voice, and that’s it. Journey that will take us first to Melbourne with the festival NYE On The Hill, moored to the ropes of Steph Strings. Marina Satti ©️ Les Escales Festival 2022 _ Christophe But the Stopovers manage to sublimate this supra-industrial decor, notably with projections on the buildings, and by its placement, on an island therefore: crossing the bridge which leads to the concerts is already the beginning of the journey. Here the landscape is steel, the trees are tiny next to the wind turbines waiting to be brought out to sea, and the VIP, the concert hall located just opposite the island hosting the festival, is nestled in a thick bunker. Indeed, those looking for a bucolic atmosphere should never put on a flip-flop in Saint-Nazaire. Or finally with La Femme, joined for the duration of a piece by its former singer Clara Luciani, perfect opening of the weekend, “ on the beach, in the sand”… or rather on the concrete, at the feet of boats as tall as buildings. Or with Suzane, her lyrics to shout with her raised fist and her acrobatic kicks in the patriarchy. Or in front of the impressive scenography of Woodkid, admired from the top of the Ferris wheel installed next to the stage, at sunset. Impossible to sulk his pleasure in front of Morcheeba, his Sunday languor, the unfailing smile of his singer and the hits of Big Calm, who celebrated her 25th birthday this year (so many birthdays!). Woodkid ©️ Les Escales Festival 2022, Philippe Descoutsīut let’s not be a snob. As you can imagine, it is rather this globe-trotting prog that caught the eye of the editorial staff. A novelty at Les Escales: traditionally, the festival focused on a single city, like a kind of musical twinning which, from this year on, is going global, taking its public-adventurer to the four corners of the planet with the help of MEG Montreal, the Ugandan festival Nyege Nyege or the Chilean Desierto Sonaro. Enough to attract a large audience (more than 40,000 tickets sold), family, good-natured and motivated, attracted by the inevitable Clara Luciani, Oboy, Vladimir Cauchemar, Hatik, Deluxe or Kungs, while placing in the line-up discoveries recommended by a network of foreign festivals. And what a stopover! What could be better as a final stage than a massive birthday party, that of the Escales de Saint-Nazaire? For thirty years, the Breton port (yes, historically Saint-Naz’ is in Brittany, sorry Finisterians) has hosted this festival under the sign of travel, with a clever program combining big headliners and international discoveries. Making a last stop after a dense tour of festivals that took Tsugi, and especially the tireless teams of Tsugi Radio, on the roads of France and Navarre: this is what awaited us the last weekend of July. A magnificent edition, made of travels, fun and smiles. We hope you enjoy our programmes as much as we enjoy making them.Celebrating s he 30th anniversary this year, the Les Escales de Saint-Nazaire festival has taken the industrial city to new lands, from Australia to Japan via Hungary and Greece.
